It has been lovely getting to know all of the children in room 3 over the last few weeks. They have all made me feel so welcome as I join the Spittal team for the new school session. Everybody has settled in well and the children have all been working hard.
This term our topic is ‘Under the Sea’. The children have really been enjoying learning about the different animals that live in the sea. They have been using their ICT skills to research sea creatures of their choice and have discovered some interesting facts. During the rest of the term the children will be learning about the food chains of sea animals and objects that float and sink to develop their science knowledge. They will also have the opportunity to create images of the sea using different methods such as painting and collage and I look forward to seeing their wonderful art work when it is completed.
This term we will be developing their knowledge of number with primary 2 working on numbers to 100 and primary 3 numbers to 1000. There will be a focus on place value to help the children create a deeper understanding of how numbers are formed. Later in the term we will be focusing on addition, building up a bank of resources and strategies to help them to solve addition problems.
The children use Topmarks and Sumdog in school as a way to practise their maths and they can access both from home. If you would like your child’s log in details please just let me know and I will send this home with the homework.
In primary 2/3 we will be continuing to use active literacy for our spelling work. Each week the children will focus on specific sounds and they will have dictation every Friday to check how well they have learned their words.
During our writing lessons the children will look at persuasive writing and explanations which will have links to our topic work. Imaginative writing will also be covered this term to allow the children to develop their VCOP skills. Our handwriting lessons will focus on letter formation and placement, where we will use a mixture of written and active tasks to develop this.
Homework will be issued on a Monday and collected in on Friday. Each week children will be given, reading, spelling and maths homework. Some weeks they will also get some homework tasks that are linked to their topic.
Our P.E. days are a Tuesday and a Friday so please remind your children to bring suitable shoes for running, shorts and a t-shirt or polo shirt. Jewellery should be removed – best to leave at home.
If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to write me a short note.
