Welcome to Spittal Primary! We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter, which will be distributed each term to keep you updated with what your child is learning and events in the school. The boys and girls have settled well into P2 and Miss Murray and Mr Houston are enjoying working with the pupils. Here’s a quick round up of what is happening this term…

Welcome to Spittal Primary! We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter, which will be distributed each term to keep you updated with what your child is learning and events in the school.

We have begun the year by getting to know each other and loved looking at our Marvellous Me bags – thank you for all your hard work and support, they were excellent! We loved hearing about the children; talking about our families and things we like to do. We have also been talking about our senses and how they help us explore the world around us. We will begin to move onto talking about our houses and our area as well as seasons and the weather through stories including The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Stick Man.

Numeracy

This term we are focussing on Numbers to 10 and beyond. We are trying our best to learn our number formation rhymes, which reminds us how to write these correctly. Our number rhymes are in the homework folders if you wish to try them at home with your child and if you no longer have a copy please let me know and I can send home another one. We are also looking at recognising, ordering and creating sets of different numbers as well as beginning to think about simple additions as time goes on. We will also be exploring information handling and shape in class.

Literacy

In class, we will be looking at our three spelling words each week and strategies for these, as well as being introduced to our sounds. We are learning to say the sound correctly, hear the sound in words, recognise the sound when written down, and to write the sound accurately ourselves. We are meeting the characters of Duck Green School, who are in a lot of our stories that will be reading. We will also explore lots of reading material through daily stories in class as well as breaking our books into the beginning, middle and end and talking about similar experiences we have to the characters.

Our writing is beginning to come this term as will be focussing on letter formations. We have been practising making and writing our own names accurately. Just now, it is important that we can draw lots of detailed pictures which we can eventually add writing too – just now Miss Dowling and Mrs Johnston are helping us by scribing, although some of us might start writing words of our own.

Addititional Information

Homework
Homework will be given out weekly on a Monday and everything you need will be in your child’s homework folder. Please ensure these stay in their schoolbag at all times (except when actually doing homework) so they can stay updated and you don’t miss any important letters or notes. All children will have weekly words to write out daily, with their box of words and sounds to practise. As you know, homework jotters are also provided to use if needed. Reading books will be distributed on Mondays and which book and how much to read (at this stage is usually the whole book several times) will be noted in reading records. Children may also get maths or other homework on occasion, dependent on what we are doing in class.
PE Kit/Water Bottles/Outdoor learning
Our PE days this year are Monday and Friday. We encourage the children to leave shorts in school for them to change into on these days. They will then be sent home at the end of term to be washed and returned. Children should have suitable indoor shoes for PE and no jewellery. The children can bring their own water bottles for play time and lunch time. We have a water fountain and each child has their own cup with their name on it, to have a drink if they require one in class. We also take the children outside regularly to learn, so please make sure they have a jacket or warm coat with them each day as know how frequently Scottish weather changes – especially as the colder months begin to approach!
